Local Abortion Clinic Will Work to Meet Guidelines of House Bill 2

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It's official. The State of Texas now boasts some of the toughest restrictions on abortion in the country, after Governor Rick Perry signed House Bill 2 into law Thursday.

The law now bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It requires that abortion clinics meet the same standards as hospital-style surgical centers, and mandates that a doctor must have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles from the facility where he or she performs abortions.

Abortion rights advocates say that the law could force a majority of the state's 42 abortion clinics to close.

"It is our position to continue providing abortion services for the community," said representatives from a local abortion clinic. "We will either modify our existing facility or buy a new one that meets the guidelines of the law. For right now, we're still up and running."

Clinics have until September of 2014 to comply with the new guidelines.

Democratic lawmakers and women's rights advocates vowed to challenge the law's legality in court.
