House Votes To Block More Furloughs

Posted: Updated:

There's a big push in Washington to end the Military's massive civilian furloughs next year.

On Fort Hood forced budget cuts have slashed about 6 thousand workers' pay by at least 20 percent.

Across the nation, 600 thousand more employees are feeling the crunch too.

The mandatory unpaid leaves will continue through September, and late last night the U.S. House adopted an amendment not to let it go any longer than that.

It's part of the 2014 defense budget.

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado) pointed out that the $2 billion saved is less than half of a percent of the Military's total budget.

Lamborn said, "So this is a savings that's a false economy, it's demoralizing, it's hard on the families that are suffering this, and we should adopt this amendment which says that the Department of Defense can find other savings, but not take it from the civilians who are supporting our war fighters."

The Senate won't take up the issue until at least September.
