CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Mike Foltynewicz pitched eight shutout innings in Corpus Christi's 5-0 whitewashing of San Antonio before 5,255 Wednesday at Whataburger Field.

Foltynewicz, who fanned Tommy Medica with a 100-mph flame to close the eighth for his eighth strikeout, improved to 5-1. Houston's 2010 first-round draft choice out of Minooka, Ill., Community High School scattered six hits and walked two. Eighty of his 109 pitches were strikes.

Chia-Jen Lo finished the game for the Hooks.

San Antonio (19-14; 57-45) had the makings of a big first but came up dry. Singles from Rico Noel and Medica sandwiched Foltynewicz' strikeout of Reymond Fuentes. Center fielder Drew Muren successfully laid out for Johan Limonta's sinking liner and doubled Noel off second.

The Missions gifted Corpus Christi (17-15; 59-43) with an early run. Ronny Torreyes drew a lead-off walk and was pushed to second when Juan Oramas (0-2) plunked Preston Tucker in the head. Both moved up 90 feet on a Robert Kral passed ball before Max Stassi's sacrifice fly.

Stassi posted the Hooks' second run, a lead-off homer to left during the fourth, for his sixth yard shot in eight games. Muren's one-out RBI double scored Domingo Santana (single/stolen base), running the advantage to 3-0. Oramas was pulled for Josh Geer after walking Zach Johnson.

Jiovanni Mier's RBI ground out then plated Muren to make it 4-0 through four.

Oramas was charged with two earned runs, walked two and struck out three.

Geer retired eight straight, sitting down when Clay Zavada was inserted for the seventh. Zach Johnson drove his first offering over the left-field wall.

The Hooks hit the road for eight games, five at Midland and three in San Antonio. David Martinez (11-2) pitches for Corpus Christi Thursday at 7 p.m. against Sean Murphy (6-4).

The ball club returns home for a 10-game stand on Thursday, August 1.
