Hooks Drop Homestand Finale To Travelers

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Randal Grichuk homered twice and drove home five runs in a four-hit performance as Arkansas dispatched Corpus Christi 7-4 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 4,948.

Grichuk's two-out, sixth-inning shot off Alex Sogard was the night's biggest blow as it expanded the Arkansas lead from one run to four, Jimmy Swift and Rolando Gomez aboard via singles.

Grichuk, the Angels' first-round selection four years ago, capped his evening with a ninth-inning lead-off double.

Michael Roth (3-3), who toiled for the first six innings, earned the win. The former South Carolina standout booked three runs, seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Michael Morin picked up his fourth save by whiffing the side in the ninth.

Arkansas quickly jumped on Kyle Hallock. A lead-off single by Grichuk preceded Taylor Lindsey's booming triple into the right-center field power alley. Lindsey tripled in the fifth as well.

Corpus Christi matched in its half of the first. Roth issued a lead-off walk to Ronny Torreyes and paid for it an out and Max Stassi's single later when Domingo Santana rapped an RBI single to left.

The Hooks led 2-1 through two, Torreyes' two-out RBI plating Erik Castro (lead-off single).

Arkansas' response was a crooked number, as Grichuk followed Gomez' lead-off walk with his 17th home run, a laser off the batters' eye.

But Corpus Christi threw up yet another singleton in the third as Santana launched his 21st home run.

The Travelers took a 4-3 lead during the fourth. Travis Witherspoon walked, advanced two bases on an errant pick-off attempt and scored when Jett Bandy singled to left.

Hallock (0-2) gave up four hits, three walks and fanned three in four-plus innings.

Castro's opposite-field homer off Michael Cisco in the eighth pulled Corpus Christi to within three.

The Travelers snapped a seven-game losing streak Sunday and stand 26-24 in Texas League second-half action, 59-60 overall. Corpus Christi is 30-20 and 72-48.

The Hooks bus to Northwest Arkansas for a three-game series Tuesday through Thursday. Mike Foltynewicz (5-2) pitches for Corpus Christi in the opener against Brooks Pounders (4-7).

Tuesday's first pitch is 7 p.m. All Hooks games are broadcast on NewsRadio 1360 KKTX. Air time is 6:45.
