The family of a 24-year old man who was killed Friday night spoke out on Monday about the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to police, 21-year old Dena Gomez ran over her common-law husband, Alfredo Ayala, as the two were leaving a bar on Leopard Street. Ayala was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.
"Eventually we are all going to get through this. We're just going to try to stay strong for the family," said Adrian Ayala, Alfredo Ayala's younger brother. "That's all we can do, because I know Freddie would want us to move forward with our lives after all this."
Police say that on Friday night, Ayala had decided to go out with friends after work. Gomez confronted him at the bar, and at one point, hit him in the head with a bottle.
As the two were leaving the bar, Ayala reportedly went back inside to retrieve his cell phone, and according to police, that's when Gomez stepped on the gas and ran him over.
Despite everything, the victim's relatives say they do not blame her.
"She must have just snapped or something, because she's really been holding everything in," Adrian Ayala said. "I really don't blame her. I guess it's just the heat of the moment."
"He would have wanted us to move forward. He was a great outgoing guy. We all loved him," said Louie Joslin, Ayala's cousin. "Hopefully she can come out and be with their kids, because I know Freddie would want her to be with his kids. I know she probably didn't mean to do it. I know she didn't."
As for Gomez, she is six months pregnant with the couple's second child. She has been charged with murder.
