Corpus Christi police are looking for a woman who ran from officers at Academy Sports & Outdoors around noon Wednesday, crossed SPID and got away.
Officers were responding to an unrelated incident involving a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of Academy.
Footage from our Kiii-TV tower cam shows store employees confronting the woman. She drops a bag, which was later found to contain items stolen from the store, and flees.
A man runs after the woman, pointing to alert the nearby police officers. One officer gives a short chase, but breaks pursuit when the woman decides to cross SPID on foot, nearly getting hit by passing vehicles on multiple occasions.
"One of the suspects took off running out of the store. The loss prevention officers were pointing to her, so one of the officers gave chase," said Lt. Robert Alvarado of the Corpus Christi Police Department. "As she got toward the freeway and show her intentions of crossing the freeway on foot, the officer disengaged his foot pursuit so he or she wouldn't get hurt."
The woman -- wearing shorts, a white or grey shirt and brown boots -- jumped the median on SPID, crossed over the barrier and ran straight to the Kiii-TV station, stopping briefly in front of the main entrance before running off toward Denny's.
Store management said a second woman was detained outside of the store, but will be released with no charges because there is not enough evidence to connect her to the shoplifting incident.
"She wasn't forthcoming," Alvarado said. "However, over the course of the investigation, we do have a pretty good idea of who the suspect is."
If you have any information as to the whereabouts of the woman, please call Crime Stoppers at 361-888-8477.
