Celso Villareal IV Named as New Premont Police Chief

PREMONT (Kiii News) -

Premont has a new police chief.

"I look forward to doing the best job I can for this community," said Police Chief Celso Villareal. "I thank the council members who voted for me their faith in me, do the best job I can."

City Council Members elected Celso Villareal IV during Tuesday night's city council meeting. Villareal beat Interim Police Chief, Luis Valadez. The decision comes after council members ousted former Police Chief Ricardo Herrera saying he was charging excessive overtime. Villareal says the position is about trust.

"It is a small city, small department, a lot of times you have one or two officers working," said Villareal. "If you gain the trust of the community, you get a lot of important information from them to solve some crimes and make some cases."

Chief Villareal is currently working for the state and has 22 years of law enforcement experience under his belt.
