A new study shows that antipsychotic medication can put kids at a greater risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Researchers say that children taking the medication have three times the risk of developing the chronic medical condition, compared to children taking other psychotropic medications. They also say the findings make sense, given that the side effects of the medications include weight gain and insulin resistance.
However, the study shows an association with those side effects and not a cause-effect relationship. Experts say the medications should be taken with caution for children and youth.
