Community Comes Together to Help Students Begin School Year

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

From school supply giveaways to immunizations, there's been a lot going on around the Coastal Bend to help students prepare for the start of the new school year.

The Road Hogs, a Corpus Christi based motorcycle club, continued their tradition of bringing smiles to kids at Zavala Elementary Friday, delivering backpacks and school supplies.

"Well I know when I was growing up, certain people didn't have certain things, and some people are more fortunate than others," said Rodney Glenn of the CC Road Hogs. "We're just trying to help the people."

"It means a lot to our students. This community is going to be very appreciative of all of these donations," Zavala Elementary Principal Christina Barrera said. "Many of our teachers spend money out of their own pockets because a lot of our students cannot afford to be prepared like they need to be."

Attorney's Herman and Herman, Celso Rodriguez and several other individuals helped make the donations possible.

Meanwhile, children at one low-income housing complex are going to start the school year with the supplies they need thanks to the YMCA and some other organizations.

The Y put on a free backpack giveaway at the Northside Manor Apartments Friday. More than 100 bags were handed out. HEB and Flint Hills Resources also helped organize the event.

And what about school immunizations?

The Nueces County Public Health District will be hosting a clinic from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at 1702 Horne Road. The clinic is for kids ages 4-18, and parents should bring their current insurance card and immunization records. MedicAid will also be accepted.

There will also be free Blue Bell Ice Cream for students.

If you would like more information on the immunization clinic, contact the Health District at 361-826-7220.
