Students Return for First Day of the 2013-14 School Year

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It was the first day of the school year for about 39,000 kids in the Corpus Christi Independent School District, along with most other districts in and around the Coastal Bend.

Parents and school officials had their hands full getting the day off to a good start Monday, but CCISD Police Chief Kirby Warnke said that, after a few bumps, everything went smoothly.

"We had a pedestrian incident on one of our campuses. That seems to be resolved," Warnke said. "And we had a lockdown on one of our campuses, and that has since been turned over. But absent of those two things, it's been fairly quiet."

Those hiccups included an pedestrian accident involving a student outside of Ray High School. Chief Warnke said the student was brushed by a car, but wasn't seriously hurt.

The other incident included a short lockdown at Ella Barnes Elementary School as police searched for an assault suspect in the neighborhood.

Other than those two incidents, most schools reported no problems.

"We had a surprisingly smooth start this morning," said George Lerma, Principal of Cullen Middle School. "We rebuilt the schedule and stuff, so there was some potential that there was going to be a little bit of confusion for some of our kiddos, but it went very well."

Parents said they were happy and proud to see their little ones returning to school, but some said it took some adjusting in the morning.
