Motorists saw some relief on Monday on Staples Street, in front of Hamlin Middle School, after work crews worked through the weekend to open up that stretch of road.
It's one of the busiest streets on the southside, and for the past two and a half months, crews have been working in that area. Now, that construction work has shifted toward downtown on Staples, from Doddridge to Brawner Parkway.
Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns went Live from that area with details on the current construction project.
Although the newly opened portion of Staples Street is good news for businesses in and across from the Hamlin Shopping Center, it is going to be a challenge for businesses like Walgreens, Starbucks and McDonalds, which are on the other side of Doddridge.
Crews had to work around the clock this weekend to finish the work on the westside of Doddridge.
"The concrete's been finished for awhile. We were working on revising the striping plan," City Traffic Engineer Dan Biles said. "We got that done last week, and they were able to work that Friday, Saturday and Sunday to get that done. Worked around the rain to get that done, and get it opened for school."
The biggest problem for motorists might be at the intersection itself. There was nearly a head-on collision there on Monday as a motorist ,who did not realize that Staples on the eastside of Doddridge is now only a two-lane road, pulled into the oncoming lane to turn left.
So remember to be very careful as you're turning or driving down that section of Staples.
