CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Monday wasn't only the first day of class for students at area schools. It was also the first day of class for the 72nd Corpus Christi Police Department Academy.

Officials with the Academy said it's the largest class they have had in 10 years, made up of 12 women and 18 men. The new cadets have undergone a thorough and vigorous hiring process, as well as a physical fitness assessment, and most said they are excited at their new career path.

"I am very excited. I have waited for this for quite a while, and today is our first day," Cadet Alexandra Molina said. "It's kind of nerve-racking."

"The police department allows me to grow as a person," Cadet Skyler Barker said. "So many paths that you can take in the police department, but it also allows you to help everyday."

It will take the new cadets 29 weeks to complete their courses and graduate.
