Corpus Christi public libraries have come up with a novel way to help some of the area's elderly citizens. Through the month of September, the public will actually be able to pay overdue library fines with canned food.
"People can bring their cans and non-perishable products in to benefit the senior program with the City," said Debra Bruce with the Food Bank of Corpus Christi. "So whatever the total weight is, that will be credited to the senior programs at the Food Bank, so they'll get food back for that, for their program."
The campaign is all part of National Hunger Awareness Month. For every non-perishable can or package donated, a dollar will be taken off from overdue fines. The offer expires Sept. 30.
