It has been two months since a natural gas leak caused a deadly home explosion on Holmes Drive, not far from the Kiii-TV station on the city's southside.
The impact of the blast extended out at least a quarter of a mile in all directions, demolishing one home and damaging many others.
At least one resident in that area is continuing the slow process of recovery. It's been two months, but not much has changed along Holmes Drive. The damage is still visible, and for residents impacted the most, life still hasn't returned to normal.
On the other side of a makeshift orange fence are the remains of Denise Bracey's home.
"When you figure this house has been in the family since 1967 -- I've live here for the last 25 years -- it's a lot to go through," Bracey said.
For the last two months, Denise has had the painstaking task of going through the charred remains of what she owned. She spends 8-12 hours a day taking pictures, writing down model numbers on each item, and calculating how much it will cost her insurance company to replace.
"Because this is the information they want to know, and they have to know this in order to do their business," Bracey said. "They just can't come out and say, 'Oh, we feel so sorry for you, let's give you a whole bucket of money.' They have to do this in a way that makes sense. The only way they know what I have is for me to tell them."
It's time consuming and sad, she says, to spend so much of the day in a house that once held precious memories; one that she can no longer live in.
"I'm still alive and making do. I'll be okay," Bracey said. "That life up until the 12th of July is pretty much gone. There isn't much left in that house."
Bracey's home was right next door to the source of the explosion. She operated a repair business with her husband from her home, and it is now closed. Her family continues to try and adjust, and are currently living in a rental home.
"They will clear this lot, we'll rebuild," Bracey said. "New frame, new storage building and a new shop. Go back to living my life as the way before."
