CCISD Board Hears Presentations on Proposed Names for New School

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Emotional and inspiring stories were shared Thursday night by people who want to honor others by submitting a name for the high school being build in the city's southside.

The new high school is currently under construction on Cimarron near Lipes on the city's southside. 27 names have been proposed, and at the Thursday night meeting, each of those suggestions was given five minutes of presentation time.

Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns went Live from CCISD headquarters as board members heard presentations from people about each of the 27 names being considered for the new school.

Below is a list of the names that have been proposed.

Individuals:

Chris and Robert Adler -- Community Leaders; Chris Adler is also a former CCISD Trustee

Abraham Braslau High School -- Former land owner and community leader

Andy Alaniz Memorial High School -- First American Casualty of the Gulf War

George H. W. Bush -- Former US President

Dwight David Eisenhower -- Former US President

General Marc Cisneros Memorial High School -- Retired Lt. General, US Army; currently CEO of the Kenedy Memorial Foundation

Dr. Tony C. Diaz Memorial High School -- Community Leader; Retired CCISD Administrator; Former CCISD Trustee

Sarita Kenedy East -- Philanthropist

Eisenhower -- Former President

Walter W. Furley High School -- Pioneer in broadcast media

Hector P. Garcia High School -- Civil rights leader

Lt. James Gray -- Sixteen-year veteran with the Corpus Christi Police Department

Joe A. Gonzalez -- Founder Joe. A Gonzalez (JAG) Education is Or Freedom GED College Scholarship Program; Nueces County Commissioner for Precinct 2

John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy -- Philanthropists

Eulalio H. Marin -- Journalist and Labor Organizer

John F. McGregor High School -- Historical Photographer

Loyd Neal High School -- Nueces County Judge

James A. Ragan -- Founder of Triumph Over Kid Cancer

Judge Hilda Tagle High School -- Senior United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Texas

Senator Carlos F. Truan High School -- Former State Senator and Representative

Kevin Weber -- CCISD graduate and inspiration for Carroll HS Kevin Weber Memorial Leadership Medal and Kevin Weber Memorial Scholarship

Subdivision or area:

Corpus Christi Memorial High School -- In honor of all veterans

La Playa High School -- Corpus Christi attraction

Veterans Field High School -- In honor of all veterans

Memorial High School -- In honor of all veterans

Veterans High School -- In honor of all veterans

Veterans Memorial High School -- In honor of all veterans

The name will not be chosen until a board meeting that is scheduled for Oct. 14.

    Sounds of a wild rollover crash could be heard for blocks over on the Westside of the City. The accident happened just after 12:30 on Sunday morning on the Crosstown freeway near Gollihar. According to police the driver was traveling southbound on the expressway and tried to avoid another vehicle on the road. Investigators say he swerved into another lane and lost control.     Residents woke up to the sound of gun shots in one westside neighborhood Saturday morning. The incident happened just before 2:30 Saturday morning at a home near the intersection of Cortez and Baldwin Boulevard.
