CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Police responded to the scene of a near-drowning of a one-year old girl in a swimming pool on the 6000 block of Lost Creek Circle around 10 a.m. Friday.

The child's 20-year old mother said she went to the restroom, and when she came out, she found the little girl at the bottom of the swimming pool. Neighbors heard the cries for help, and performed CPR until medics arrived.

The girl was unconscious and not breathing when officers arrived at the scene. Investigators said the girl had been in the water for between 5-10 minutes.

"The mother went to the restroom. The one-year old was wondering around the house and somehow gained access to the backyard," said Officer Robert Alvarado of the Corpus Christi Police Department. "Wether she pushed open the door, the door wasn't properly secured, we are still investigating. The child went out to the backyard and fell in the pool."

The child and mother were transported to Christus Spohn South, where the little girl's condition was stabilized. She was then transferred to Driscoll Children's Hospital.

Investigators reported that they noticed there was neither a fence or a barrier to stop the child from gaining access to the pool.
