Students Show Support for Teammate Fighting for His Life

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Some teammates of a young man who is fighting for his life after being stung by fire ants at a football game Wednesday night showed their support for him Friday.

Haas Middle School eighth-grader Cameron Espinosa was attacked by fire ants during a football game at the school Wednesday. After suffering a reaction to the bites, he was rushed to the hospital and put in the intensive care unit.

Espinosa also plays center for a youth football team called the CC Tigers, and fellow football players from that team -- students from Grant Middle School -- heard what happened.

His teammates decided to go to school wearing their football jerseys in honor of Cameron, on Friday. They also wore a special ribbon with his number on a football helmet. They said it was an easy call for them to make.

"Let's wear our jerseys to support Cameron Espinosa, because he's in the hospital and having a rough time fighting for his life," CC Tiger Tristan Cavazos said.

"We're like family," CC Tiger Nolan Campbell said. "Like, we all go down with each other."

"It made me so proud because it came from them. It came from the heart, and that's what we're about," Grant Principal Carla Villarreal said. "Developing these relationships. That's one of our goals at Grant Middle School, for our students, staff and community. So I'm very proud of these boys."

The players actually visited Cameron at the hospital on Thursday, and plan on paying another visit. This time they plan on delivering a huge "get well" banner.
