CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Vandals are costing the City about $8,000 to repair a piece of art that sits on the seawall in front of the American Bank Center.

The piece was created by artist Mel Chin, and placed on the seawall about 10 years ago. It is one of five sculptures downtown that were made by Chin, depicting the history and heritage of Corpus Christi. The sculpture originally cost $50,000, and now it has to be repaired.

"There were two feet, originally, and now one is missing, and it's been missing I think sometime before the summer time," said Reba George of the City's Parks and Recreation Department. "And so at that point, besides filing a police report, we engaged with the artist to see about replacing the part that was missing."

This week, council members approved funding the repairs. The two feet end at the ankle and represent the vanishing Carancahua Indian with his faithful canine companion. The art work is expected to be repaired sometime this fall.
