Haas Middle School Football Player Passed Away Overnight

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Shortly after the morning bell a Haas Middle School Monday morning, it was announced that eighth-grader Cameron Espinosa passed away overnight.

The 13-year old had been hospitalized after being bitten by fire ants and suffering an allergic reaction during a football game at the middle school last Wednesday.

The Haas Middle School principal then asked for a moment of silence to honor Espinosa and his family.

"So at this time, a moment of silence is going to be dedicated to Cameron Espinosa and to his family," the principal said over the loudspeakers. "If you can join me for a moment of silence at this time."

Corpus Christi Independent School District Superintendent Scott Elliff provided a statement at a news conference held at Haas Middle School Monday morning.

"I have to share the news that Cameron Espinosa has passed away early this morning. We'd like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Cameron," Elliff said. "Corpus Christi ISD will do all we can to support this student's family and the entire Haas school community during this sad time. We've provided additional grief counseling here at the school today for students and staff as needed."

Parents and students were all saddened by the loss.

"I couldn't explain how it feels for a parent to lose a child," parent Joel Garza said. "Speaking as a parent, I'd rather have my kids lose me before I lose my own kids."

"Deep sorrow for them, because I know how it is to lose a child," parent Mike Mason said. "Me and my wife lost a little girl, so we know how they're feeling."

"He was a very good person, so we just hope everything goes good with everything and all the people," student Ilene Rodriguez said. "All of our prayers go out to the family, but it's really hard without him here."

A spokesperson with Driscoll Children's Hospital confirmed that Espinosa has passed away overnight. Doctors had put the teen in a medically induced coma to reduce the swelling in his brain.

All extracurricular activities at Haas Middle School have been canceled for the week, and there is no word from the district on a change in procedure for examining athletic fields for ant mounds.

3News did learn that the family of Cameron Espinosa is now being represented by the Thomas J. Henry law firm.

Seaside Funeral Home will be handling Espinosa's memorial. Visitation will take place from 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Corpus Christi Cathedral at 11 a.m. Thursday, and burial will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
