Mosquitoes Active in Coastal Bend Areas Since Recent Rains

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

If you have spent any time outdoors lately, you have probably noticed that the much welcomed rains have opened the door to unwelcome mosquitoes.

"What we're worrying about is the pest mosquitoes," said Tony Pantoja of the City's Vector Control. "They're the ones everybody is going to be complaining about the most."

The drought only managed to delay the onslaught of the pests, but with the recent rains, mosquitoes are out with a vengeance. The City's Vector Control said their recent monitoring indicates that the hardest hit areas are the city's southside and the Calallen area.

While Vector Control plans to target those areas, there are things we can do ourselves to keep our own personal spaces mosquito free.

First, remove any standing water, including water that may be leftover in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels and potted plant trays. Also, replace outdoor lights with yellow "bug lights," which tend to attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights.

The best advice, however, is to say inside during the evening hours, when mosquitoes are most active.
