Man Dies After Jumping From Horace Caldwell Pier

PORT ARANSAS (Kiii News) -

A 29-year old man died Tuesday night after jumping from the Horace Caldwell Pier in Port Aransas and drowning.

Port Aransas police and the U.S. Coast Guard were called out to the scene at around 10:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a swimmer that had not returned to shore. After more than four hours of searching, the body of David Wayne Waller of Covington, Texas, was found on the waters edge.

"Last night, approximately 10:30 p.m., the Port Aransas Police Department received a call of a swimmer that had not returned to shore," said Lt. Darryl Johnson of the Port Aransas Police Department. "Officers responded in which they determined two persons had jumped off the end of the Horace Caldwell Pier, and one of the persons made it shore. The other person did not."

According to Lt. Johnson, Waller and a friend had been drinking prior to the incident and, at Waller's suggestion, decided to jump off the pier. Waller's friend made it to shore, but Waller did not.

"The pier is probably the worst area in Port Aransas, as well as the jetty, to swim at or next to, because of the currents and things, and the pilings in the water," Johnson said.

Johnson said that the waves near the pier were four-six feet high, making the swimming conditions especially dangerous.

"A search by the Coast Guard and Port Aransas Police Department revealed that he had submerged and had not surfaced," Johnson said.
