Heavy Mosquito Activity in Rural Communities in Coastal Bend

SAN PATRICIO COUNTY (Kiii News) -

Since the recent rains that have hit areas in and around the Coastal Bend, San Patricio County has been seeing an onslaught of mosquitoes.

In fact, the problem is widespread throughout the rural areas of South Texas. Where fields were once dry, small lakes now provide a breeding ground for the fast producing mosquitoes.

San Patricio County's Agricultural Extension experts recommend taking a few steps to help cut down on the mosquito population.

"One of the things that we can do to help control mosquitoes is to dump our pans and our dog bowls, and drain any shallow water pockets, that way we take away the ability for the larva to develop into adult mosquitoes," Extension Agent Bobby McCool said.

Another way to get rid of mosquitoes is by tossing mosquito "dunks" into standing water. The dunks last up to 30 days and are safe for animals and children. They can even be used in watering troughs and water bowls. The dunks prevent the larvae from hatching, interrupting the breeding cycle.

The Center for Disease Control recommends using repellent anytime you go outside; especially during the prime mosquito-biting hours, between dusk and dawn.
