Former Coastal Bend Officer Arrested for Shooting in Selma

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A former Coastal Bend police officer was arrested near San Antonio last Thursday after ambushing two police officers in Selma, shooting one of them in the face.

It all started off as a domestic disturbance call. Two police officers from Selma, just north of San Antonio, responded. According to officials, there were reports that a woman was being dragged by a man.

Authorities said that both officers were ambushed by Jessie Hernandez, Jr.

"They walked in. The gentleman, Hernandez, gave no warning and just began shooting," Selma City Administrator Ken Roberts said.

Hernandez shot one officer in the face and the other in the leg. One of those officers returned fire, hitting Hernandez twice. All three were rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment.

This is not the first time that Hernandez has been involved in a shooting incident. He was a former Robstown police officer, as well as a Corpus Christi police officer.

Back in May of 2007, when Hernandez was working as an off-duty officer at Christy Estates Apartments in Corpus Christi, he was allegedly being targeting by a man who tried to run him over. Hernandez responded by pulling out his gun and opening fire on the driver, killing the man behind the wheel.

In 2008, the City of Corpus Christi had to settle a lawsuit that cost $350,000 after the police department investigated and found no wrongdoing on the part of Hernandez.

He was later fired for an unrelated incident.

As far as this latest incident involving the former officer, law enforcement officials in Selma said they have found a number of weapons after going through Hernandez' home. He is now in the Bexar County Jail facing several charges.

The two officers he struck are expected to recover.
