Vaughan Returns to Lead #4 West Texas A&M Over A&M-Kingsville

KINGSVILLE, TX (Javelinas Athletics) - The Texas A&M-Kingsville headed into Saturday's game with fourth-ranked West Texas A&M looking to improve to 3-0 on the season but gave up 24 unanswered points in the second quarter en route to a 69-7 loss at Javelina Stadium.

West Texas struck first with a 1-yard run by Aaron Harris to cap a 10-play, 75-yard drive.

After coming up empty on a drive to the West Texas nine in the first quarter when a fourth-down pass intended for Robert Armstrong, the Javelinas tied the game early in the second quarter with a 10-yard pass from Aaron Bueno to Derek Tesch for a touchdown at the 10:47 mark of the second quarter. The play capped a 6-play 58-yard drive.

The Buffaloes then exploded for 59 unanswered points scoring on offense, defense and special teams. Harris added two more rushing touchdowns giving him three on the night. They also scored on 26-yard fumble return by Curtis Slater and a 95-yard kickoff return by Nathan Slaughter to open the second half.

Slaughter's return made the score 38-7 seconds into the second half.

The Hoggies finished with 188 yards of total offense with 96 on the ground. Bueno in his first start at quarterback was 13-of-23 passing for 92 yards and a score. Cornelius Shackelford had a team-best 47 yards rushing on 14 carries, while Greg Pitre had 46 yards on nine attempts. Anthony Washington had two carries for 36 yards.

West Texas had 419 yards of total offense. Dustin Vaughan, who entered as the nation's passing leader at 444, finished 25-of-33 passing for 227 yards and a touchdown in three quarters, while David Lehocky had a pair of TD passes off the bench.

The Javelinas travel to Midwestern State on Saturday at 7 p.m. looking to get back in the win column.
