A Calallen girl has learned the virtue of charity at a very young age. At eight years old, Emily Silver not only talks the talk, she walks the walk.
Emily chooses to celebrate her own birthday in a practical way by giving her gifts away to those in need. She is Someone to Know.
Emily is getting ready to turn nine years old on Oct. 7. She is planning yet another big party to celebrate. However, unlike most kids her age, she asks her guests to bring a donation for a charity of her choosing.
"It started when I was in first grade. I wanted to help," Emily said. "I love baby dolls and I love real babies, and I started thinking what the babies think about when they don't have mommies and daddies, and when they don't have stuff that I have; and I wanted to help with that."
So, Emily started the tradition with her seventh birthday, two years ago.
"I asked for money or little baby things," Emily said. "So when I did that, we went shopping a couple days after that and got all this stuff that a baby would need."
Last year, Emily collected donations for a classmate whose home was destroyed by a fire. Her mother said she is only amazed by how often the youngest of her five kids looks to give to others.
"The tooth fairy let me know one night that, when she went to get Emily's tooth, there was a letter inside saying that she didn't want money for her tooth," said Megan Silver, Emily's mother. "To go ahead and take her tooth, but to give the money to somebody who needed it."
This year, the soon-to-be nine-year old is aiming to help out an orphanage in Haiti.
"Their restroom is a hole in the ground, so I want to help with other things like that. Let them know we are all here for them," Emily said. "Although, we may be across the world, we're still there for them and know about them, and we don't ignore them. I try to help them with all that I can do."
Emily's message to kids her age is that you don't have to do everything to help someone in need. Start with small steps, like collecting a basket of food for a family in need. The young girl, who's all heart, says she wants to work with foster kids and as a missionary when she grows up.
