TAMUCC Unveils Unmanned Aircraft Systems Command Center

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is competing to be one of six test sites that will integrate unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace.

On Tuesday, university officials unveiled their UAS Command Center, located at 10200 SPID. They are calling it a game changer.

Unmanned technology is currently used to study coastal erosion, along with farm and ranch lands. Hoping to get selected as one of the six unmanned aircraft centers, officials at the university say that, in our state alone, it could bring in billions of dollars over the next few years, and some 8,200 jobs.

"The way we look at it, someday people will refer to us as the Silicon Valley of unmanned aircraft systems," said Luis Cifuentes, Vice President of Research at TAMUCC. "The fact that we are right on the Gulf of Mexico, and we have airspace that is very free of aircraft right on the coast line, gives us an edge also, than other states."

The winner of the contract will be announced at the end of the year.
