A Kingsville woman has been charged for setting her common law husband on fire. It happened Sept. 21, but details of the incident are just now coming out.
The burn victim's parents say it began with an argument, and what followed is horrifying.
"He tells her that he's leaving. He told me that she doused him in lighter fluid, soaked him in it real good, and she told him that if he takes another step, that she was going to light him on fire," said Benjamin Jackson, the victim's father. "He says, 'Well, I'm going to my parents house,' and when he went to take a step, he said that she lit him, and he said that's all that he remembers."
The victim, 25-year old Francisco Calderon, spent 11 days in a medically induced coma at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio, due to the severity of the burns he sustained. He is now recovering at the burn unit.
His common law wife, 25-year old Rita Celeste Gutierrez, has been charged with aggravated assault.
Calderon's mother said it is not the first time Gutierrez has attacked her son.
"You know, a lot of the men, their little egos are a little too big and don't want to speak out. I don't want another mother to have to go through what I went through. Okay," his mother Diana Jackson said. "It does happen to men. They just never come out and say anything."
"I was told that when she lit him on fire, I guess she panicked, and she went to pick up the clothes that she had already doused, and then went to put him out with it, and it even ignited it even more," Benjamin Jackson said.
Calderon's parents say 44-percent of his body suffered second- and third-degree burns.
Gutierrez was not home to comment on Wednesday, but she has bonded out of jail at $35,000. She and Calderon do have a two-year old child together.
Calderon's parents don't know when he will be out of the hospital, but he's lucky to be alive.
