CCISD Gets Results from Third-Party Review of Fire Ant-Related Death
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -
The findings and recommendations of a third-party review of the fire ant-related death of a 13-year old Haas Middle School student are in.
The review was done by Dr. Curtis Culwell of Moak, Casey and Associates. Corpus Christi Independent School District Superintendent Scott Elliff presented the results of their review Monday at the CCISD board meeting.
The review found that the CCISD athletic department has done an excellent job in seeing that its coaches have received the proper training required by the UIL, and have taken other reasonable precautions to address the safety needs of its student athletes.
Among the review's recommendations, CCISD should train athletic coaches in emergency allergic recognition and reaction, similar to the training received by CCISD nurses.
It was Sept. 11 when Haas Middle School eighth grader Cameron Espinosa suffered an apparent allergic reaction to ant bites that he sustained while participating in a football game on the Haas campus football field.
