Groundbreaking for New Kinney Hotel in Corpus Christi Bayfront
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -
Construction has begun for a new hotel set to line the Corpus Christi bayfront. Representatives with the Kinney Hotel broke ground Tuesday.
The $4.7 million hotel will be built on Born Street near the old Memorial Coliseum site at Water Street and Shoreline.
Earlier this year, City Council approved an eight-year tax abatement for the hotel's partners made up of 15 local business people. The boutique hotel will be three stories tall with 54 rooms.
"Instead of doing the traditional hardhat and shovel ground breaking, we wanted to do something that was more symbolic," said Rod Martin, general partner of the Kinney Hotel Partners. "Sort of the rebirth of this area. We are repurposing this lot that has been around this area, empty for 30 years."
Martin said they released butterflies to celebrate the ground breaking.
