DPS Raising Awareness of National School Bus Safety Week

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Department of Public Safety troopers are out in full force this week to help raise awareness of National School Bus Safety Week. Troopers are urging drivers to obey state law.

DPS troopers were out in Calallen looking for drivers who are not stopping when school buses have their flashing red lights on and stop signs extended.

Troopers say the moment when students are entering or exiting the bus is one of the most dangerous times of a student's trip, and drivers who pass up a stopped bus can potentially create a deadly situation.

"Make sure that motorists are reminded that kids, young people, today have unpredictable movements, and we just want to be prepared," DPS Senior Corporal Charlie Ramirez said.

DPS troopers say drivers must stop when approaching a school bus that is at a full stop with flashing lights. The drivers on both sides of the road may not proceed until the school bus resumes motion or if the flashing lights are no longer activated.
