Nuisance Abatement Program Demolishes Home on Van Loan

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The site of a fatal shooting on the city's north side, in the 1700 block of Van Loan, is no longer standing. It's part of the City's Nuisance Abatement Program.

Crews demolished the abandoned house where, back in March, a double shooting left one man dead and another hospitalized.

At the time, residents said there was a fight happening outside of the home, which was being used for gambling; but now, the home is gone thanks to a local demolition company, Mike's Demolition, who donated machinery and manpower to level the eyesore.

"A lot of times, we've actually gone in, we have found transients in the building doing the drugs, and we've walked in and found prostitutes turning tricks in the structures," said Laura Rickerson of Neighborhood Services Code Enforcement. "What we're trying to do is eliminate the slum and blight in some of the communities throughout the city, and by reducing the slum and blight, we're going to reduce the crime rate that happens in those areas of the city."

The City says that residents die, leaving their relatives to try and to take care of their homes. Then, many just abandon them. That's when the City steps in and makes the decision to demolish the home.

Rickerson said 28 homes like the one on Van Loan have been leveled in that neighborhood alone. She said another 25 homes are slated to be taken down, but there is no exact time frame for the demolitions to take place.
