John Carter Requests Clarification from Army

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman John Carter (R-TX31) is seeking answers from the United States Army after recent media reports concerning soldiers' political and religious affiliations.

The reports say an Oct. 17 pre-deployment briefing included warnings for soldiers who support certain ideologies and beliefs that may be counterproductive to the country's security. The briefing warned against certain political and Christian organizations, including the Tea Party.

Rep. Carter, along with Rep. Roger Williams and Rep. Bill Flores, sent a letter to Major General Anthony Ierardi, 1st Cavalry Division Commander and acting Fort Hood Commander. The letter requested more information regarding the validity of the media reports and an explanation of Fort Hood's policies. The representatives also asked for information as to the Army's inquiry into the matter.

"These reports are very upsetting and it is my sincere hope that they prove entirely unfounded," said Congressman Carter, co-chairman of the House Army Caucus. "The freedom to support the religious and political organizations of our choosing is the right of every American, including our men and women in uniform. I look forward to a full investigation into these reports and will help in any way possible to ensure our soldiers' rights are protected."
