Halloween Safety

Posted: Updated:

Halloween is just hours away and many are out stocking up on candy and putting the finishing touches on their costumes.

Annisa Kucera was at Target Wednesday afternoon buying big bags of candy because she hates the idea of running out and turning people away.

"We're from West, so we're gonna have twice as many kids as we did last year because our end of town is the only end of town that you can be on past seven o'clock," she said.

Other shoppers today were more concerned about costumes than the candy.

"I bought a hat here and a cape there and I'm making my little skirt," said Kathy Webb. "It's gonna be purple!"

The excitement of Halloween is definitely here, but it's a night that comes with a little mischief. It's important to remember basic information that can keep everyone safe.

First, make your kids visible to drivers on the road. Reflective stickers and flashing necklaces are a great way to make sure that your child can be seen in the dark while trick-or-treating.

Patrick Swanton of the Waco Police Department says it's also important to go with your children around the neighborhood.

"Better safe than sorry would come into play on this," Swanton said. "Your kids may not want you with them, but that's a part of being a parent...sometimes we go with our kids even though they don't want us."

For anyone on the road, police say drive slow, keep your lights on and be aware of any Trick-or Treaters in your path.
