City of Belton Makes Flooding Preparations

BELTON, TX -

(KCEN) – The City of Belton is closely monitoring Wednesday's storms and water levels of Nolan Creek, preparing for possible flooding.

"The ground is saturated right now, so the conditions are right for flooding if there is a lot of rain," Paul Romer with the City of Belton said.

Romer says Public Works crews are still working to clean up tree damage from Sunday's storm, and for the last two days they've been pulling out massive tree trunks and debris from the creek that washed down stream. "We knew rain was coming Wednesday, and we wanted the channel to be as clear as possible to reduce chances of flooding in down town," he said.

In addition to clearing the creek, city employees have also been monitoring their early flood warning system. After Belton's massive flood in 2010 that wiped out many businesses, the city invested in the early warning system. Four monitoring boxes were installed along the creek from Killeen to Belton.

They help measure the water levels 24 hours a day, and if there are high levels in Killeen or Harker Heights, the City of Belton is able to warn their residents of flood waters coming their way.

"Once the water reaches a certain level our police dispatcher is notified," Romer said. "We then have a call notification system where we've identified people who live in low lying areas. That automated system can make the phone calls to those families and businesses."

Right now Romer is not sure if there will be flooding, but he says they are watching and ready to warn those in the flood path.
