CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - The Ray Texans might have thought they could rest some guys and get healthy against a one-win Laredo Cigarroa team, but the Toros held on until late in a 36-20 Texans win.
Ray was without 6 starters just on offense and it showed early as the Texans struggled to put up points in the first half. The one bright spot was quarterback Matt Merino who had over 408 total yards on the night.
The Toros had a chance to take the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter, but missed on a 41 yard field goal. It was all Texans from there as Merino scampered for a 64-yard touchdown with Ray then coming up with a blocked punt and a safety on the Toros' ensuing drive.
Ray clinches a playoff spot with the win and although they'll likely finish 3rd in District 31-4A, they should be the top seed out of that same district in the Division I playoffs.
