Friends, Family Raise Money for Local Musician's Cancer Treatment

(KCEN) -- If you know central Texas country music, you probably know the name Rick Buckner. He's been a fixture of the country scene in the area for decades.

A few months ago, Rick was diagnosed with lung cancer. And Sunday, central Texans came together to raise money for his treatment.

Hundreds came out to a benefit concert at Geneva Hall in Elm Mott.

Several bands played at the event organized by friends, family, and fellow musicians.

They sold barbecue and held silent and live auctions to try to raise around $5,000 to help with his treatment.

"And then it can also help with how he feels, with how you feel," said longtime friend and benefit organizer Johnnie Bradshaw. "The love offering today, how he's talking, how he's feeling today with this tremendous crowd that's already in the afternoon."

"It amazes me, you know," Rick said. "As bad as this world is, people still take time to help folks."

Rick started playing guitar at age six and started his first band in Waco when he was 16.

He's now the music minister at New Hope Baptist Church.

Rick's in his fifth week of treatment and after his sixth, he'll have surgery. His doctors are optimistic they'll be able to get it all.

According to fire officials, the blaze was about 4 to 5 acres and was said to have jumped Highway 35.
