Grace Period Officially Over for New Cell Phone Ordinance

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

If you haven't already kicked the habit of using your cell phone while driving, you might want to. Starting Monday, police will begin giving drivers citations for handling their phones.

The new city ordinance, passed back in early November, bans the use of cell phones while driving, stopped in traffic or stopped at a signal light. Police offered a 30-day grace period for drivers to get used to the new law, and only gave warnings throughout that time, but that grace period is over.

Of course, you can use your phone to make emergency calls to police or 911, and you are also covered if using a hands-free device; but otherwise, if police catch you handling your phone while driving, they can write you a citation that includes a fine of up to $500.
