Corpus Christi Police Moving Back to Black and White Police Cars

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

There's a change coming for Corpus Christi police cars, and it's a retro change -- they will be moving back to a black and white color scheme.

New cars that are phased into service through attrition will look much like the City of Dallas' police cars.

Dallas police changed their police cars to black and white back in 2009, when Corpus Christi Police Chief Floyd Simpson served as assistant chief of patrol in the Dallas Police Department, and was responsible for some 1,500 patrol cars.

"We went through this process from the typical blue and white car to a black and white car," Simpson said. "That's what we're doing here in the City of Corpus Christi, because there are studies out there that talk about visibility, and the black and white just pops."

Changes besides a black and white color scheme include removing designations like gang unit, directed patrol, traffic and supervisor. Simpson said that will allow all cars to age at the same rate.

Starting Tuesday, the new black and white police cars will be phased in as replacement cars are needed.
