Neighborhoods First Gives Recommendations for Bayfront Area

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Tuesday was the first City Council meeting following last week's resounding defeat of the Destination Bayfront project, and members of Neighborhoods First lined up to outline recommendations.

"We come here this morning in the spirit of reconciliation," said John Kelley of Neighborhoods First.

"Neighborhoods First is not going away, and we plan to continue our efforts to achieve our goals," said Craig Peers of Neighborhoods First.

The group, who led the fight against the project, told council members their list of recommendations, which include prioritizing infrastructure improvements, a new master plan for street rebuilding, continuing Sherrill Park improvements, retaining parking in the Shoreline realignment project and improving bond language.

Kelley said the defeat at the polls did not hurt the council's credibility.

"I think it hurt some of the folks who supported it, but they'll have to wait, you know," Kelley said. "It's going to matter about what they do between now and the next election that will determine their fate."

While council didn't discuss the recommendations, City staff are looking into how to use bond money on improvements along the Bayfront.
