Special Tribute Held for Deceased Pearl Harbor Veteran

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The attack on Pearl Harbor happened almost 71 years ago, and there are not many survivors left in the Coastal Bend; but just last week, one more passed away.

That U.S. Navy veteran, Raymond Hasker, was given a special tribute on Tuesday.

Hasker joined the military when he was 18 years old. On his first tour, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor. He was on land at Ford Island when the attack took place.

"They went to the hospital to get stretchers, and were doing other things that were supporting, trying to figure out how to help," Hasker's daughter Susan McCauley said.

Hasker, along with other sailors, tried to get planes up to defend Pearl Harbor.

"They ran to the airfield to try to get the planes out of line because they were coming down and bombing all the planes, and they got three planes up," McCauley said.

"I don't know how many times I heard the battle of Pearl Harbor, and each time, it was better than the last," Hasker's son-in-law Lee Tallas said.

Hasker returned home in 1944, and a week later, he married his childhood sweetheart, Naomi Sue Mayberry. He went on to serve in the Korean War, and after 24 years serving in the U.S. Navy, he retired after a parachute jumping injury.

The Navy veteran went on to work for ARADMAC, now known as the Corpus Christi Army Depot, where he later retired.

"He was a very happy person," McCauley said. "Very sweet, and loved all of us."

On Tuesday, his family said their last goodbyes to the husband, father and war hero they all loved.
