Thelma from "Good Times" Speaks to George Evans Students

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

George Evans Elementary students received an inspirational message from a well-known actress on Wednesday.

BernNadette Stanis, best known as Thelma from the 70s television sitcom "Good Times," spoke to them about not letting fear get in the way of their dreams.

"Don't let fear stop you from walking into your destiny," Stanis said.

One student said Stanis has inspired him to pursue his dream of playing for the Houston Texans.

"You need to do what you want to do, and you can't let nobody take that away," fourth-grader Jose Loya said. "If it's meant for you, you can't let nobody take that away from you."

"It's very important because, when I was young and people would come and talk to us about different things, it would help us. Give us self-esteem," Stanis said. "Let us know that they are touchable and they can make it also."

Stanis will be the keynote speaker at the Corpus Christi's Black Chamber of Commerce's 70th anniversary celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday. She will also be doing a meet-and-greet reception at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Omni Bayfront Hotel.
