Corpus Christi Caller-Times Announces First Female Publisher

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times announced Wednesday a change in their top leadership position.

Libby Averyt has become the first woman to be named publisher of the paper. She will replace Darrel Coleman, who is retiring after 35 years in the newspaper business.

Averyt actually began her career at the paper in 1986 as a night shift reporter. At one point, she chose to spend a weekend in jail rather than divulge her sources in her coverage of a high-profile murder trial. Now that she's in charge of the business side of the paper, she says the Caller-Times will be able to handle the financial pressures of having a customer base that's come to expect "news on demand."

"Really, what we are is a media company," Averyt said. "I don't really care whether we deliver that in paper, electronically or whatever the next method may be, because I'm sure there'll be something else in the next five years or sooner than that."

Averyt officially takes over the job on Jan. 1.
