Local Leaders, Educators Cracking Down on Truant Students

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Coastal Bend students with a proven truant record were called before Nueces County Justice of the Peace, Joe Benavides, for a reality check.

"The ratio is 23% in the Coastal Bend of drop outs," said Benavides. "One element that we try to is to reach out to these students and succeed and graduate from high school."

Benavides says the goal is to keep these kids in school. Various local leaders spoke with about 150 students and their parents. Mark Escamilla, President of Del Mar College, says he tried to express the importance of higher education and how dropping out impacts the community.

"That's the last thing, they need and frankly the last thing the community needs is for our students to drop out or think about it," said Escamilla.

Efforts to reduce truancy continue throughout CCISD. One popular program is "Operation: Keys." This operation is where leaders go door to door to try and encourage students to return to class. Justice of the Peace Benavides says they will follow up with the students who attended last night's meeting.
