TAMUCC Hosting Bone Marrow Drive On Campus Friday

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A local woman fighting a cancer that attack the bone marrow is banking on the generosity of Coastal Bend residents to help her in her battle.

A search for a suitable bone marrow donor will begin at noon Friday on the campus Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and will go on until 4 p.m.

Irma Galvan spent the last two decades working in the office at Zavala Elementary School supporting students and faculty alike. She was diagnosed with cancer back in 2011, and as is the case with most blood cancer patients, no one in her family is a compatible bone marrow match. Now, she is hoping to find a stranger who is.

"It's very personal to me. I want everyone who can to come out and donate. Not just for my mother but for everyone in the community," said Dr. Susan Luis, Galvan's daughter. "We have a high percentage of Hispanic population in the Corpus Christi area, and I'm hoping we can save a life right here in our community."

The bone marrow drive will be held from noon-4 p.m. at the Early Child Development Center on the campus of TAMUCC. The process is simple. It involves swabbing the inside of the mouth.
