Robbery Suspect Arrested After Colliding with State Trooper on I-37

An armed robbery suspect out of San Antonio was taken into custody by Department of Public Safety troopers Friday following a high speed pursuit on I-37.

According to DPS troopers, the chase began around 11:45 a.m. on Highway 281 near Three Rivers. The Sheriff's Office had tried to pull over a car after it came up flagged as a stolen vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle was 46-year old Edward Bentley, who allegedly robbed a San Antonio business and carjacked the vehicle at gunpoint earlier Friday morning.

Bentley led the Sheriff's deputies and DPS troopers on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of up to 120 miles per hour, before he went into the exit of a rest area north of Labonte Park. He tried to leave that rest area through its entrance, and that is when he crashed head-on into a DPS trooper.

The DPS trooper received non-life threatening injuries and was sent to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital to be checked out, along with Bentley.

Bentley now faces several charges.
