Kingsville Hit and Run Victim Recovering, Suspect Out on Bond

KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) -

The woman who turned herself in for the hit and run accident of a 14-year old boy in Kingsville was released on bond Friday.

That boy, 14-year old Justin Prado, is now recovering at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital after having to undergo emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

According to Justin's family, he was wearing his headphones while walking from his home to his grandmother's house at around 8 p.m. Thursday. He was in the 800 block of East Caesar Avenue when neighbors heard a loud crash and rushed outside to find Justin lying next to the roadway.

The 2010 Camaro that hit him had kept on going, but an hour later, police say that Laura Martinez walked into the police department and said she was the driver of that vehicle.

Martinez gave a statement and then a blood sample. She was then booked into the Kleberg County Jail, and eventually made the $20,000 bond on Friday.

Meanwhile, Justin's mother and cousin were at Memorial Hospital as he recovered from surgery. His mother was too shaken up to talk to 3News, but his cousin, Twyla Bazaldua, said things look good for him.

"He's stable. He's doing really good. He talks to us and stuff like that. He's been able to drink water, but it's just a process, a healing process," Bazaldua said.

Bazaldua said that Justin was listening to rap music at the time of accident. It's a kind of music he loves, and he raps himself. He is also on his middle school football team.

Justin's accident has drawn a lot of support on Facebook, everyone wishing him a quick and full recovery.

His family said he may also have a broken shoulder. They have set up an account to cover his medical expenses at Kleberg Bank, under the name of Josephine Gonzales.

As for Laura Martinez, she is charged with causing an accident involving serious bodily injury, which is a third-degree felony.
