Plane Grounded at International Airport After Engine Fire

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Flight crews at the Corpus Christi International Airport were preparing to bring passengers on board a plane Monday when they saw smoke and flames coming from its left engine.

It's definitely something you do not want to see before taking to the skies. According to airport officials, the fire broke out just before 7 a.m.

"They had an issue with the left engine, as you can see behind me," said John Hyland, Chief of Public Safety at the International Airport. "Upon starting the engine, they had a flame out. You saw flames and smoke coming out of the engine."

Quick thinking pilots onboard the plane activated a fire control system, quickly extinguishing the flames, and thankfully no one was hurt. However, some passengers did see their travel plans go up in smoke.

"Well, I'm going to Houston yeah, then on to Portland, but I've already missed that, too," delayed passenger Bob Barton said. "It's going to be a long day."

"Everybody was frustrated and, you know, now they are getting more frustrated because everyone has been in line for about two hours now," delayed passenger Ken Montagne said.

Airport officials said the plane is still grounded and is being worked on by mechanics. At last check, all United flights are still running on time.
