Military Matters: College Credit for Nursing Experience in Military

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

It's a one of a kind program that gives college credit to members of the military and veterans for their medical experience in the service.

In our Military Matters report, we found many local students here at home who are taking advantage of the unique program.

Several veterans and members of the military are being given a chance to use their previous experience in the military along with a program called E-line Military or ELM to complete their nursing degree through Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The ELM program started in 2010 with a federal grant.

The White House and the Department of Defense are actually looking at A&M Corpus Christi's ELM program as a model to be used for other nursing schools across the country.

Right now there are more than 50 students enrolled in the program and about 300 being advised.

The ELM program also helps address the nationwide nursing shortage, which is expected to exceed 70 thousand in Texas alone by the year 2020.
