Suspect in Alleged Country Club Home Burglary Shot by Homeowner

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Corpus Christi police are still investigating an apparent burglary and shooting at the home of a local businessman Monday morning.

It was around 10:30 a.m. when police were called out to the home of Fox Nursery owner Dan Caballero in the 5300 block of Greenbriar Drive.

Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns went Live from the scene with more details on the investigation.

Early reports from investigators said a suspect was breaking into the home when the homeowner shot him. Investigators would not say whether it was Caballero or his wife who pulled the trigger.

Police said the suspect left a blood trail out the rear of the property, which faces the Corpus Christi Country Club, and was apprehended next to the home. He was taken to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Corpus Christi Police Department Captain Mike Alaniz said investigators have spent the day interviewing witnesses, including the homeowner and his wife. They are still trying to determine if more than one burglar may have been involved after initial reports indicated there may have been two.

"They continued to search throughout the Country Club area, and also into the golf course itself, because indications were that someone ran towards the golf course," Alaniz said. "Our officers were on both sides in and around the area to make sure that it was clear."

Investigators said the burglary suspect that was shot was found next to the home. Although none of the neighbors heard any shots, one neighbor did say the crime leaves her feeling unsafe.

"It's really scary to think you're in a nice, safe, neighborhood and then something like this happens," neighbor Gloria Trevino said. "It's really scary, and not that long ago, there was a car broken into. A neighbor's house. So it's like one, two, and it's really scary."

A police forensics team spent the day examining the scene and has not released any findings as of yet. As of 4 p.m., police said the suspect was still undergoing surgery.
