Unions Applaud Alice City Council's Firing of City Manager

ALICE (Kiii News) -

Representatives from the Alice Police Officers Association and CLEAT, the state's largest police officers union, gathered outside of Alice City Hall Monday in a show of support for City Council.

They were there to applaud council members Yvette Johnson, Frank Hinojosa and Raul Chapa for their decision last month to fire City Manager Ray De Los Santos, Jr.

Both groups said the council members were brave for firing De Los Santos, because they have received quite a bit of heat for it.

Representatives from CLEAT, which stands for Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, also called for an investigation into Mayor Pro Tem Michael Esparza, who voted to keep De Los Santos as City Manager.

"We would like to have an outside investigation into the bid process on the awarding of their healthcare coverage," said Todd Harrison of CLEAT. "We found out that they're paying, for a comparable city, they're paying almost double what other cities are paying in Texas for their healthcare coverage, and that the coverage is actually provided for by a company owned by the mayor pro-tem."

Esparza said he has done nothing wrong.
